The telltale
signs

  • Small rust-coloured spots on mattress seams and around the box spring.

  • Black specks like grains of pepper in the folds of the box spring or behind the headboard.
  • A sweet, slightly sickly smell in a heavily infested bedroom.

How we work

  1. 01

    Inspection

We confirm the species and locate the hot spots: bed, box spring, baseboards, door frames, upholstered furniture.

  2. 02

    First treatment

Targeted application in cracks and seams, rather than spraying the whole room.

  3. 03

    Follow-up visit

May be recommended about 14 days later, to assess activity once the eggs have hatched.

  4. 04

    Visit report

What was treated, where, and what to watch for in the following weeks — in writing.

Bed bugs in Montreal: what you should know

How they get into your home

Bed bugs don’t jump or fly: they crawl, and they travel with us. They arrive in a suitcase after a trip, a used sofa or mattress, a moving box, or move from one unit to another through the walls and hallways of a building. An adult is about five millimetres long, the size of an apple seed, and hides during the day in seams, cracks and joints near where people sleep. That’s why people often notice the bites long before they see the insect.

July 1st, a high-risk season

In Montreal, a large share of leases end on July 1st. For a few weeks, thousands of households move at the same time, furniture goes from one apartment to another and some of it waits on the sidewalk. Before picking up upholstered furniture or buying a used mattress, check the seams and the underside with a flashlight. After a move, watch for signs for a few weeks: eggs hidden in boxes or furniture can hatch well after you arrive.

What to avoid

Store-bought bug bombs scatter bed bugs into neighbouring rooms instead of eliminating them. Going to sleep on the couch has the same effect: they follow the person. Throwing out the mattress without treating the room leaves behind the ones hiding in the box spring, baseboards and furniture. While you wait for the visit, run your bedding through the dryer on high heat and leave the items in the bedroom where they are. If you rent, tell your landlord at the first signs: neighbouring units may be affected too.

Before
our visit

  • Wash bedding in hot water and dry it on high heat.
  • Clear the area around the bed and the bedroom baseboards.
  • Don’t move anything from one room to another: that’s how an infestation spreads.
  • Plan to be away for about four hours on treatment day.

Frequently
asked questions

Do I have to throw out my mattress?

Almost never. A properly treated mattress can be kept. Throwing it out without treating the room solves nothing and costs money for nothing.

Does this mean my home is dirty?

No. Bed bugs travel in luggage, used furniture and clothing. They have nothing to do with how clean a home is.

Why a follow-up visit?

Eggs can hatch after the first treatment. A visit about two weeks later lets us check whether a new generation has appeared and adjust the treatment.
