Mouse and rat
extermination

Setting traps isn’t enough: as long as the opening they come through stays open, others will follow. We find the opening and seal it.

The telltale
signs

  • Five-millimetre droppings along baseboards and at the back of cupboards.
  • Chewed food packaging, spilled flour or cereal.
  • Scratching noises in the walls or ceiling, especially at night.

How we work

  1. 01

    Full inspection

From the attic to the crawl space. We look for entry points, not just droppings.

  2. 02

    Capture

Locked bait stations placed away from traffic areas, and mechanical traps along the paths we find.

  3. 03

    Sealing

Openings larger than six millimetres that we find are blocked: foundation joints, utility entries, door sills, soffits.

  4. 04

    Follow-up

A visit can be scheduled to check the stations and the condition of the seals.

Mice and rats: what you should know

Why they come in during the fall

In Quebec, mice look for shelter as soon as the nights turn cold, from September to November. A heated house with food within reach gives them everything they need to get through the winter. An adult mouse can squeeze through an opening of about six millimetres, roughly the width of a pencil. The weak spots are almost always the same: pipe and cable entries, dryer vents, foundation joints, the bottom of garage doors and damaged soffits.

Mouse or rat: telling them apart

The house mouse is small, with large ears and a tail about as long as its body. Its droppings are three to six millimetres long, like a grain of rice. The Norway rat, the one you see in the city, can be more than twenty centimetres long without its tail; its droppings are much larger and it often leaves greasy marks along walls. Rats tend to stay in basements and near sewers, while mice easily climb up into cupboards and ceilings.

Cleaning up droppings safely

Don’t sweep or vacuum dry droppings: the dust you stir up can carry bacteria and viruses. Air out the room, wear gloves, dampen the droppings and nests with a disinfectant or a mix of bleach and water, wait a few minutes, then pick everything up with paper towels and put it in a tightly closed bag. Wash your hands afterwards. Going forward, keep dry food in rigid containers and put bird feeders well away from the house.

Before
our visit

  • Store food in airtight containers.
  • Clear the area around appliances and the back of lower cupboards.
  • Note where you heard the noises, and at what time: it helps guide the inspection.

Frequently
asked questions

How long before it stops?

The noises usually die down in the first few days. Sealing, for its part, tackles the reason they were getting in.

What if I have a dog?

The stations are locked and the traps are placed away from traffic areas. Tell the technician about your pets: they will adjust the placements and tell you what precautions to take.

If I see one mouse, are there always more?

Almost always. A mouse seen during the day usually means a population that has been settled for a while.
