Wasp and hornet
nest removal

Depending on the nest’s location and accessibility, the job may involve treating it or removing it. A nest that is simply sprayed and left in place can attract other insects.

The telltale
signs

  • Steady traffic to the same spot on a soffit, a crack or a vent.
  • A constant buzzing behind a wall or ceiling.
  • Wasps going in and out of a hole in the ground along a path.
  • Activity that shoots up in August and September: that is the colony’s peak.

How we work

  1. 01

    Locating

We find the actual nest, not just where you see them flying.

  2. 02

    Protection

Full protective equipment. Nest removal is the one job where the risk is immediate.

  3. 03

    Treatment or removal

Depending on location and accessibility, the nest is treated or removed.

  4. 04

    Checking

The surroundings are examined for a possible second colony nearby.

Wasps and hornets: what you should know

Wasp, hornet or bee?

In Quebec, the wasps that cause trouble are mostly yellowjackets, striped yellow and black, which nest in the ground, inside walls or under a shed. The bald-faced hornet, black and white, builds a large grey balloon-shaped nest in a tree, a hedge or under the eaves. Paper wasps make small open nests with visible cells, hanging under a railing or a ledge. Bees are stockier and covered in hair: they feed on flowers and rarely take an interest in your plate.

A nest that grows all summer

In spring, a single queen that spent the winter in shelter starts a nest no bigger than a golf ball. All summer the colony grows: by late August, a yellowjacket nest can hold thousands of wasps. That is also when workers look for more sugar and become pushy around patios, garbage cans and drinks. With the first frosts the colony dies; only the new queens survive the winter, somewhere other than the old nest.

If you get stung

Unlike a bee, a wasp can sting more than once. If you are stung, move calmly away from the nest, wash the skin with soap and water and apply something cold to reduce swelling. Call 911 right away if the person has trouble breathing, if their face or throat swells, or if they have been stung many times. For advice, Info-Santé answers at 811. People who know they are allergic should keep their epinephrine auto-injector within reach all season.

Before
our visit

  • Keep children and pets away from the area until we arrive.
  • Don’t plug the entrance hole: the wasps will look for another way out, often into the house.
  • Don’t try a store-bought product on a nest up high: that is how most multiple stings happen.

Frequently
asked questions

Is it urgent?

If the nest is near a door, a window or a walkway, yes — especially if someone in the house has allergies. Call us and we will see what we can move around.

Can the nest come back in the same spot?

The colony dies over the winter and does not reuse the nest. But the spot stays attractive: that is why we also treat the surface.

What about bees?

We don’t exterminate them. If it is a honeybee colony, we will refer you to a beekeeper who will come and collect it.
